Desalination plant in El Prat de Llobregat
The biggest desalination plant in Europe
Barcelona, Spain
Opening: 20.07.2009
This new infrastructure is capable of producing 200 million liters of drinking water per day. The direction of this project is under the direction of Ayesa.
With the supply of 60 hm of desalinated water every year, the new desalination plant guarantees the water supply to 25% of the metropolitan area population in Barcelona. Also, it will allow for better drinking water quality and an optimization of the accumulated resources at the reservoirs of the Ter-LLobregat system according to the available volumes, the rain regime, and the applied hydrologic planning.
The plan project comprises the sea water gathering, the submarine conduction to the pumping station, the pumping system and the discharge tubing between it and the desalination plant, the desalination plant itself, the water pumping to the Fuensanta deposits for its incorporation to the local network, and the rejected water connection to the existing submarine emissary of the residual water sewage of Prat.
It is the biggest desalination plant for the human supply in Europe, and one of the most important regarding a global investment, near to 180 million Euros. The constructive and technological solutions adopted herein have followed the rigorous environmental protocol and a model of energetic efficiency capable of reducing the electrical consumption during the process with brand new energy recovery systems.
